Your role at BRE
This role supports the delivery of fire testing services for construction products, with a focus on roofing materials. Working within the Fire Protection, Passive and Suppression team, the technician will assist in the preparation, execution, and documentation of tests in line with relevant fire safety standards.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
Prepare and carry out fire tests, including ignition, flame spread, heat release, smoke opacity, and toxicity assessments
Maintain accurate records and test documentation in accordance with regulatory and internal standards
Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and laboratory protocols during testing activities
Maintain and calibrate testing equipment and ensure the laboratory is kept in a compliant state
Follow work instructions and standard methods accurately and reliably
Report progress, test outcomes, and any potential issues to the Section Leader
Manage time effectively to meet testing schedules and maintain throughput targets
Support continuous improvement and routine problem-solving within the lab environment
What we are looking for
Essential Criteria
These are required for successful performance in the role:
Ability to maintain a clean and calibrated laboratory environment
Self-motivated with a focused and diligent approach to work
Strong accuracy in note taking, record-keeping, and reporting
Organised and able to manage own time effectively
Flexible and adaptable to shifting priorities or tasks
Ability to receive, interpret, and clarify technical work instructions
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Good written communication skills for documentation and reporting
Reliable with strong punctuality and attendance
Desirable Criteria
These would enhance performance or ease transition into the role:
Experience working in a UKAS-accredited laboratory environment
Skills in managing or supporting customer relationships

Work Location Options
On-Site – This role requires full-time presence at our Watford office. You must live within a commutable distance.
